Dekoron Cable provides safe alternative to lead-sheathed models

The new DEKABON range from Maser is being marketed as an environmentally-friendly alternative to lead-sheathed cables, in the form of a hermetically-sealed, patented copolymer-coated aluminium tape, bonded to a polymer over the sheath.

This allows users in process, mining and other industrial environments to take advantage of the long-term life of lead cables, without the health risks.

A large Australian oil refinery based in Victoria is currently using DEKABON, and is pleased with the environmental and economic benefits the new technology has provided “The refinery wanted to source a lead free cable and were surprised when Maser offered a relatively in-expensive solution,” said Maser Australia’s general manager, Matt Young.

“The client had the impression that environmental responsibility would come at a cost however DEKABON provides economic benefits beginning from the cost of the cable and continuing through to installation.

“When you consider that DEKABON is available as instrumentation, control or thermocouple cable and can be ordered in as little as 300m, you would have to ask why any end user is still using a lead sheathed product”.

The DEKABON cable is designed to be corrosion resistant, and includes both mechanical and electrical properties found in top-of-the-line lead-sheathed cables.
Main features and benefits include;
Corrosion resistance – Patented co-polymer, which forms a critical part of the bonded or laminate construction, prevents aluminium from chemical attack, prevents corrosion and provides extended service life versus bare metal sheaths.
Mechanical properties – DEKABON technology, Co-polymer –
Aluminium – Polymer Sheath, combines the properties of the different materials and generates a synergistic effect where strength of shielding tape is combined with flexibility of polymer.
Electrical properties – Aluminium tape closely matches screening effectiveness of 2mm thick lead, while external steel armour improves reduction factor values.

Dialight's LED Success in Australia Power Station                       July 2009

Maser Communications (Australia) have recently finalised an agreement with a large NSW power station to supply Dialight Industrial LED lights.

Early in 2009 the power station undertook trials to decide whether LED fixtures were a feasible, cost effective alternative to certain on-going issues with their current lighting solution.
After consultation with Maser Communications, several areas of the plant were selected and the LEDPAK and SAFESITE series were positioned alongside traditional fittings. Matt Young, General Manager of Maser Communications, said “Apart from the obvious benefits associated with LED lighting a reduction in operating and maintenance costs, shock and vibration proof and instant on/off - the improvement in light quality was the major benefit that the customer could not ignore. The rugged solid-state design of these LED fixtures creates a new era where failed lamps and expensive re-lamping costs will become a thing of the past.” LED technology continues to improve and the expanding range of fixtures available from Maser Communications offer innovative reliability and performance for the industrial end-user.

The LEDPAK series offers practical alternative to fluorescent lighting for walkways, gantries, workshops & storerooms. The LEDBRIGHT and SAFESITE series come in 150W and 250W equivalents for specific task, worksite or access illumination.

Dialight’s LEDPAK and SAFESITE series are also available in New Zealand through Maser Communications (NZ). For further information contact the sales team on 0800 663 782 or sales@maser.co.nz

Digital Audio Cable from Belden                                            July 2009

Belden’s Digital Audio Cables, Provides Optimal Digital/Analog Performance and Installation Ease

Belden Brilliance 1353A, a new Cat 5e digital audio single-pair cable, is ideal for use in professional and commercial audio applications. Since it is essentially ‘single pair-
Category 5e,’ tested to 100 MHz, its low capacitance (15 pF/ft, 49 pF/m) makes it excellent for both analog and digital audio.
Available from Maser Communications (NZ) the 1353A is especially valuable where small size, low weight, and high performance are required, and can be used anywhere a traditional analog or digital shielded pair might be employed, even where cabling may experience rough handling and harsh environmental conditions.

Other benefits if this new Cat 5e digital audio single-pair cable include the following:

1) Installation Efficiency
Many installers routinely use Category 5e or Category 6 cables for audio applications. But, until now if you wanted a single Cat 5e pair, it was necessary to take a four-pair cable and laboriously separate out a pair. The availability of this new ready-to-use jacketed single pair eliminates those inconvenient steps, saving installation time and improving installation efficiency.

2) Installable Performance
Belden’s patented Bonded-Pair technology provides maximum ruggedness and consistent electrical properties during and after installation. During installation, cables are typically pulled, bent, and even kinked. All of these actions can alter the dimensions and physical properties of the cable, degrading its electrical performance. However, the Bonded- Pair design attaches the two wires together (without glue!) for a uniform conductor-to conductor spacing. This helps the cable withstand the rigors of installation and maintain high performance.

3) Its Not Just for Digital Use, But Analog Too, and More
As a bonus, the 1353A Single-pair Digital Audio Cable can be used for analog applications as well as digital. As by nature of the products design, Belden Digital Audio Cables have a low capacitance due to their high impedance,
making them excellent analog cables.

4) Outstanding Construction for Indoor/Outdoor Versatility
This innovative new product’s jacket is made of a rugged matte-finish PVC, yet the cable is still highly flexible and very round. Overall nominal cable diameter is 0.126 in. so the minimum installed bend radius is 1.26 in. The insulation on the pair is polyolefin. Operating temperature range for Belden 1353A is -20ºC to 60ºC and this cable complies with NEC/(UL) CMR (riser) and CEC/(UL) CMG fire ratings.

LED Lighting Makes Hazloc Sense                                                    May 2009

A new approach to lighting is now becoming a key issue in the industry. Dialight’s SafeSite® illumination fixtures allows areas like hazardous location facility to improve their overall lighting, reduced its energy consumption and access many additional business and operational benefits by replacing traditional lighting with LED fixtures. Some of these key benefits include:

1) No More Need for Flash Lights

In some hazardous locations there are issues with the quality and colour rendition of high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting, which normally results in employees having to use flash lights at night, even if there is a direct fixtgure above the equipment.
At Dialight their LED fixtures are designed specifically for hazardous locations around the world from oilfields and chemical processing to mining, flour mills and power stations. That means there’s plenty of evidence that their rugged, solid state design SafeSite® illumination fixtures can deliver significant value in these locations whether in new installations or retro-fitted. Designed to be virtually impervious to shock and vibration, they make expensive re-lamping costs a thing of the past.

2) Improved Lighting

Light pollution is greatly reduced with Dialight’s lighting fixtures which utilise the latest LED technology with proprietary optics designed to focus light directionally so that they illuminate only the required area, such as straight walkways, avoiding adjacent and upward light spill.
Also the efficient optics used in LED Hazloc products like SafeSite® result in more light reaching the target area compared to the previous HPS installation. They also result in lower wattage LED fixtures being required and a lower total number of fixtures being used in the complete installation, so saving energy and installation costs.

3) Low cost of ownership

The combination of reduced energy consumption, a 50% cut in the number of lighting fixtures and a fixture life warranty of 5 years with over 50,000 operating hours and the resulting reduction in maintenance clearly produces a low cost of ownership.

Additional Benefits

Use of LEDs opens up access to many other benefits in hazardous location installations. One is their excellent performance in low operating temperatures. Dialight’s LED fixtures are rated down to -40°C and still provide 100% of the rated lumen output, unlike fluorescents whose output decreases rapidly at low temperatures. LEDs achieve 100% light output from the second they are switched on. This ‘instant-on’ ability can be very significant in hazardous locations that use independent generators. These can be prone to blackout and brown outs, resulting in the need for additional emergency lights. By fitting LEDs to the centra battery or standby power systems expensive downtime and unnecessary exposure to danger can be avoided.
Instant-on ability also creates more opportunities to save energy. LEDs can be coupled with occupancy sensors and either completely switched off or reduced to a lower illumination level when no one is present around the installation.
This not only reduces energy but also dramatically extends the operating life of the lighting system.

Cable Sheaths to Protect Against Aggressive Chemical         February 2009

Dekoron is promoting a range of cables which can be furnished with ‘armour’, protecting them from harsh environments in the oil and gas industry.

The cable sheaths or ‘armour’ were designed to answer the problem of the permeability of existing plastic cable sheaths on the market due to humidity and aggressive chemicals.

“Penetration of these elements to the core of the cable compromise its overall lifetime performance. A conventional cable core protection against above mentioned elements is generally achieved by applying a lead sheath,” said the company.

Dekoron’s DEKABON’s cable constructions can be furnished with armouring options including served wire armour and interlock armour for additional physical protection.

The DEKABON technology is scalable and has been applied to instrument, control and thermocouple extension cables, says the company, also claiming that the technology has already been used by all major oil companies in their refineries and petrochemical facilities for over 25 years.

The technology is now available locally for the oil refining and petrochemical industry.

Banana Peel Projector Cables from Belden                   30 October 2008

“Belden Projector Cables in a Banana Peel composite cable format, offer optimum flexibility and faster, easier installation break-outs for room-to-room Riser and Plenum Audio/Video applications.”

As the demand for sophisticated multimedia systems continues to grow, so too does the need for easier-to-install composite Audio/Video Projector cables. Installers are frequently called upon to run inter-room cabling to support highperformance A/V communications systems in schools, universities, municipal buildings, houses of worship and commercial office spaces.

To meet market demand, Belden introduces its Banana Peel® Projector Cables, an innovative design combining both audio and video cable components within a single composite cable. Designed for use in modern, high-tech buildings, Banana Peel Projector Cables are extremely flexible and easy to handle, enabling installers to save time and labor by running multiple A/V cables simultaneously from room-to-room, where similarly

equipped wall plates are desired in each room.

Within the composite Projector Cables, the video components include six Belden RG-59 type 75 Ohm Precision Video Mini Coax Cables (Product No. 1281R-Riser and 1282P-Plenum) for analog and digital video. Audio components include two Belden 22 AWG Shielded Twisted Pair Audio Cables featuring aluminum foil-bonded jackets for easy

access to the positive, negative and shield drain wires.

Banana Peel Construction Means Faster Installation

Unlike conventional projector cables with overall jackets which are difficult to handle and add to the cables’ fuel load, the new Projector Cables feature Belden’s exclusive Banana Peel construction. In this design, individual cables are affixed to a central spline and are simply peeled off as needed for termination, making installation much faster and easier.

The Banana Peel construction also enables easier break-out of cables when the full bundle of eight components needs to be divided to run two smaller bundles to separate wall plates. Belden’s coax cables offer true 75 Ohm impedance, are sweep-tested, and come with Return Loss assurance. In addition, the elimination of the outer jacket reduces the cables’ total fuel load, making the Belden Projector Cables more suitable for in-wall and plenum use.

Belden Amoung Industry's First Cable Producers to Achieve FieldBus Foundation H 1 Cable Registration

Belden has recently announced that one of the company’s family of IndustrialTuff®DataBus® Cables for FOUNDATION™ fieldbus applications is among the industry’s first to achieve registration to the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 Cable Test Specification. The Fieldbus Foundation is a global not-for-profit corporation consisting of leading process end users and automation companies.

FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 network is an all-digital, serial, two-way communications protocol that standardizes the interconnection of field devices. In November 2007, the Fieldbus Foundation’s new H1 Cable Test Specification was released to provide users with increased assurance that their industrial cabling infrastructure will provide robust and reliable physical layer performance.

Belden attained H1 registration for part number 3076F. This IndustrialTuff DataBus cable is a Type A 18 AWG stranded cable featuring a polyolefin insulation, Orange or Intrinsically Safe Blue PVC jacket, and 100 percent Beldfoil® shield with TC drain wire. For a cable to qualify, its manufacturers must conduct testing and submit successful test results based on the IEC 61158- 2:2003 standard for Type A cable, which includes (but is not limited to): impedance, capacitance unbalance, connector pin-outs, and attenuation. Registration signifies that the cable is suitable for any H1 fieldbus application, including high temperature and corrosive environments.

Commenting on the registration, Frank Koditek, Belden’s industrial line product manager, notes:“Belden strongly supports the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 cable registration process because it gives our customers additional assurance that our Type A cables will deliver the quality and performance we promise. And, we credit the Fieldbus Foundation for its ongoing dedication to establishing measurable standards for physical layer requirements, since the cabling infrastructure is the cornerstone of reliable network performance.”

Belden offers a comprehensive line of IndustrialTuff DataBus cables for FOUNDATION fieldbus industrial networking applications. All Belden fieldbus cables meet DataBus for Fieldbus IEC 61158-2 (ISA/SP-50) specifications.

Multiple Ways to Save Energy With LED's                              September 08

Switching to white LED lighting from conventional incandescent light bulbs, HID (high intensity discharge) or fluorescent lighting can bring big improvements in radically reduced maintenance and improved energy efficiency for many organisations

LED’s not only have minimum to zero maintenance needs but also organizations can also benefit from their lower energy needs. At Dialight their LED luminaires are warranted for 5 years and at 90W can replace a 150W HID light, saving 40% on energy. Being semiconductor-based they’re built for switching off and on, unlike HID and fluorescent lights, so you save even more power by avoiding the need for 24/7 lighting, being able to turn the LEDs off when there’s no one there. It makes them ideal for integrating with energy saving controls and also substantially extends
their lifespan.
But that’s not all they deliver and many of these additional benefits become particularly significant if you’re operating in what can be classed as a hazardous environment. These include, for example, areas that handle fuel, utility plants, paint shops, dusty environments or processing plants.

Dialight manufactures an LED luminaire called SafeSite™ specifically for such hazardous locations. As a solid state device with a very robust housing manufactured to UL Class I Division 2 standards, it’s virtually impervious to shock and vibration, making re-lamping costs a thing of the past in these demanding environments. Its lower voltage means it’s also safer to use in combustible atmospheres and produces less heat output for the air-conditioning to contend with. LEDs’ lower operating temperature even brings a further benefit for wet-wash environments where the impact of cold water would shatter a conventional light bulb.

Another great benefit of LED’s is when it’s finally time to replace them, LEDs are safe and easy to recycle, as they contain no mercury or other hazardous materials.

Belden Offers an Industry First                                           September 2008

Belden Offers an Industry First: SDI/HD Coaxial Cables With Design Features That Make Using Compression Connectors Faster, Easier and More Secure

With the proliferation of plasma and LCD screens, there is growing market demand for high resolution video in a host of applications, including:

• AV presentations and whiteboards for meetings and classroom training

• Projector presentation systems

• Teleconferencing

• Closed-circuit surveillance and security systems

• Video for home theaters

• Video pick-up in sports bars, casinos, racinos and other commercial venues

• High Resolution Surveillance Video

• SDI, video, and Broadband HDTV

• Broadband Internet Delivery

Concurrently, AV and security system integrators are increasingly selecting compression connectors, which can be problematic when used with traditional foil design coaxial cables. The foil can bunch up when inserted into compression connectors or, if the foil is left in place, foil “stringers” can result which can short to the cable’s center conductor.

The Belden Solution

Belden has designed its System Integrator Digital Coax cables especially for use with compression connectors. The cable design features a foil shield that is securely bonded to the jacket and is self-removing during preparation for connection, thus making installation easier and eliminating the risk of foil stringers and shorting. Belden

is the first cable manufacturer to offer system integrators this unique cable solution.

Available in Four Designs, Five Colors

The new Belden System Integrator Digital Coax cable line includes four products: 1355R and 1355P (RG-59/U Type), and 1356R and 1356P (RG-6/U Type).

All cables are sweep tested to 3GHz, and all guarantee -15dB Return Loss (RL) performance. The cable design includes a tinned copper braid shield (85 percent coverage) and bonded Duofoil® shield (100 percent coverage) for effective shielding

in higher frequency applications. The foil is placed over the braid and securely bonded to the jacket so it is self-removing during cable preparation.

The cables are available in five colors: Black, White, Red, Green and Blue.
